Mask Series
by Monique Atherton
As a mixed-race, Thai American who grew up between both cultures, I’ve faced not only the blanket of invisibility experienced by Asian existence in America but have also had a perceived identity forced upon me by people I encounter. As a result, my work has been an ongoing exploration of my own identity and my relationship to people and places.
Monique Atherton is an artist who uses photography as a launching point and incorporates installation, sculpture, and performance to explore themes of the politics of identity, self-expression and visibility in the 21st century.
